How to setup a secure Wireless network

The planned audience for this article is the average PC users possessing a couple of PCs and a broadband Web connection, and need to use the link with a router so they can all have Net access. This is part 1 of a 4 part article on setting up a safe wireless network. The first part basically deals with why you want a secure network, and what folk will do to exploit your information after they are in your network. There are tons of good how-to articles on the simplest way to set these up, but this alternative to the each day paperwork will show you why, not just how. If you know why you do something you’ll be prepared to cope with issues if they come up, and the way to analyze them.

Setting up a safe wireless network with the smallest amount of security advised. Why would you like to secure your wireless network? There are a mess of reasons and they are going to be explored here. There are likely more reasons, but these are the ones that concern me the most:

* Intruders can use the Net connection you are paying for, freely.

* Intruders can use your Net connection to download music and porn.

* If something is done illegally on your Web connection, you are responsible.

* Intruders can get access to all of your PCs, and the data in them.

* Intruders can send spam, or illegal emails through your IP address and you are responsible.

* Intruders can monitor any and all information going across your network, eg checking account info, private info with usernames and passwords.

The list could go on, but that should make you nervous enough to need to try this. If your network isn’t secured, they can simply find you and connect to the connection with nil effort. The safer your network is the harder it is to get into, that suggests for you too. I recommend going full lean and making it secure as practical, but if you have kids coming and going from faculty, and they need to use your network when they’re visiting, you may need to setup a safe network with minimum security.
